An Interactive Installation for Artomatic 2017

As a Jewish woman, I am part of two groups facing increased prejudice. While I am not religious, one thing I take from Judaism is the concept of solidarity. We must stand up with those being oppressed and facing prejudice in the pursuit of justice and equality.

Following the election, a group of over 50 Rabbis printed a full page statement in the Express paper in hopes of easing some of our fears and anxieties of what is to come as a result of the election. This message resonated with me so much I tore out the page and kept it. One part of the message that stood out to me was a declaration to the vulnerable communities:

“We are with you. We will not abandon you. Only together do we transcend the shortsightedness of those who choose to threaten us, divide us, and do us harm. Our actualized love for all humanity – divinely and equally created – will be your sanctuary.”

We are in a time where the many injustices we face, fueled by the ignorance of the current administration, amplify the importance of solidarity. Through apathy and silence we become complicit with our oppressors. If we do not stand up for those around us, who will stand up for us in our time of need? The world is watching. Let us be an example of peace, tolerance, and solidarity. It is our duty as Americans and human beings to resist the people and policies that try to divide us.

Fighting for what is right is worth it.
